The year begins with a mandatory, three-day overnight retreat held in September followed by nine, full-day monthly sessions from October through June. A graduation dinner in June concludes the year.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Leadership Development Retreat
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
September 14, 15, 16, 2008  
Kick-off Retreat -The Leadership Oakland XIX class will participate in a 3-day, two-night retreat where participants are provided an overview of the region and its challenges, insight into their own leadership style, and an opportunity to get to know their fellow Leadership Oakland XIX classmates.  They will also set goals for their year in the Leadership Oakland Cornerstone program.
Economy & Government
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Economy: This session will look at the local and global economy and the economic impacts facing Oakland County and Southeastern Michigan. 
Government: How does it all work? Local and regional elected official will share information on local and county governmental structures and responsibilities in the region.
Health & Human Services
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
The challenges facing the county’s human services agencies and health care institutions will be the focus of this session. An on-site visit provides additional opportunity to learn about this critical issue.
Media
Wednesday, December 10, 2008
This session will put Leadership Oakland  XIX participants face to face with members of the media, who will explain the ins and outs of what’s news and why. 
Race & Ethnic Diversity
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Building an increased awareness, understanding and sensitivity to race and ethnic diversity issues is the focus of this session. Participants explore the impacts of diversity and race on the region, as well as personal and professional relationships.
Justice System
Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Hear first hand from those involved in the criminal justice system. This session will explore the process as well as the challenges facing the adult and juvenile justice systems in Oakland County.
Education
Wednesday, March 11, 2009
How has education evolved and what does the future hold for tomorrow's students? A respected panel of educators will discuss the many issues facing educational institutions in our community.
Arts & Entertainment
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
The significance of maintaining and nurturing a broad spectrum of arts & entertainment activities in our community will be the focus of this session. On-site visits and presentations allow Leadership XIX participants to experience the value of arts and entertainment first hand.
Shaping the Future
Wednesday, May 6, 2009
What does the future hold for Oakland County and Southeastern Michigan?  Participants will take the knowledge and insights they have obtained throughout the program to develop their personal plan of action to tackle some of the region’s most critical challenges.
Closing Project / Retreat
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
This session is devoted to a review of the year and examining the next steps for Leadership Oakland XIX participants. The group’s class project also will take center stage.
Graduation
Wednesday, June 3, 2009
Leadership Oakland XIX participants and their guest are invited to celebrate the completion of the 2006-2007 Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program and the participant’s commitment to contained leadership.
