25 Leaders in Junior Leadership Oakland Program

E-mail Print PDF

This year 25 high school students (who will be entering their senior year in the fall) completed a three day leadership program at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills.  The program, “Jr. Leadership Oakland,” strives to help develop leadership skills and encourage students to learn, live, work and stay in Michigan.  The program was implemented five years ago as the class project of LOXVIII and was so successful that Leadership Oakland has made it a part of their on-going business model.  Through donations and sponsorships, there is no charge to students to participate. According to Leadership Oakland Executive Director, Chris Scharrer, “We had an awesome group of young people this year who were fully engaged throughout the three days.  It is heartening to work with these bright young leaders and help them shape their dreams, skills, and abilities.  Our future will be in good hands with leadership from individuals like we saw in this group.”

Auburn Hills, MI – On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, the Leadership Oakland Class of XXII will sponsor “Moving Forward 2012: A Career Conference for Young Adults.”  This will be an inspirational and educational experience for Southeastern Michigan’s future workforce.  The full day conference is designed to expose 18-24 year old young adults to some of the region's most dynamic leaders and allow them to learn from some of the area’s top talent.

“Although there are several great programs and opportunities in the area, there are many young adults who are unaware or not the right age to benefit from them.  By providing a regional conference and premier access to participants, we will set the ground work for moving them into the bright futures they deserve HERE in Michigan,” Kiesha Speech, LOXXII class member and Marketing Committee Chair for the event.

Included in the day are informative workshops that are designed to equip participants for success in the workplace, a networking lunch where they will be connected to industry professionals from “emerging sector” careers, and a keynote presentation by Victor Green, Director of Community Relations at Wayne State University.  A laptop and other items will be given away during a prize drawing at the event.

“Moving Forward” will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in the Student Center at Baker College of Auburn Hills, 1500 University Dr., Auburn Hills, MI 48326.  Registration starts at 8:00 a.m., with the program beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are $15.  To purchase tickets or learn how to become a sponsor, visit www.leadershipoakland.com/index.php/movingforward.  For more information regarding the conference or Leadership Oakland, call (248) 952-6880.

 2012-2013 LO Cornerstone Program

Application Deadline for LOXXIII:
Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Priority application status has ended. Applications received after May 30th may be placed on a waiting list.

Since 1990, the Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program has brought together nearly 1,000 leaders from corporate, civic and non-profit organizations throughout the community. Each year, as part of the 9-month program, 50 developing leaders delve into the important issues facing the region.

"Leadership Oakland is a bridge builder in our region.  By connecting participants and alumni members to key resources throughout Southeast Michigan, and through the events and activities this organization sponsors, our region has leaders who are focused on collaboration as a way to build economic strength.  Additionally, participation in the program prepares individuals to question the status quo and, importantly, to step up to the opportunity of contributing to solutions to our region's toughest challenges. I recommend this program to anyone that cares about leadership in a way that contributes to something even greater than the 'bottom line'." - Michelle Hodges, LOVI, President, Troy Chamber of Commerce.
